At least 20 museum and heritage specialists from Australia and Southeast Asia attended Manlilikha ng Bayan (National Living Treasure) Eduardo Mutuc's lecture-demonstration of his pukpuk (metal craft) work at the National Museum in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, on March 16, 2016. There has only been one Kapampangan recipient of the Gawad ng Manlilikha ng Bayan Awards so far, Mr. Eduardo Tubig Mutuc of Apalit, Pampanga, who received this distinguished award in 2004. Mutuc's contribution to contemporary art in the Philippines is his lavish craftsmanship, which can be found at many Filipino faithful's houses of worship; we can consider this as one of his greatest achievements.

INTRODUCTION TO HIS WORKS

Eduardo Mutuc starts his metalwork projects with a precise drawing. He then chisels out the intricacies on a block of wood to transfer the design. He then covers the wood with a metal sheet before carefully hammering the design out with a mallet and an old rubber lipper. He next dips the solid metal sheet in molten silver, a perilous job that must be done outside to avoid inhaling the deadly vapors. He then continues to hammer and polish the item to bring out the finer features.

“The cross is made of wood and brass. The piece is transitional, the metal "swag” could be removed and the cross itself can be taken out of the base for wall hanging.”
